Rolex Submariner
The Rolex Submariner is the quintessential diver’s watch. Introduced in 1953, it was the first watch on the market that was waterproof to 100 metres. Original models (model numbers 6204 and 6205) can be distinguished by their straight hour hands. Rolex introduced the 6200 in 1954 which was the first Submariner to feature the ‘Mercedes’ hour hand which has become such a recognisable feature of the Submariner. These are great starter watches for the collector and buyers will pay premiums for certain models.
The COMEX Sub
Keep an eye out for Submariners which were specially commissioned by the French diving company COMEX. Based on the 5513, COMEX Subs feature a helium release valve which prevents the watch being damaged when their saturation divers are undergoing decompression. First introduced in 1972, COMEX Subs were updated in 1974 with the 5514 which was the first Rolex to feature another company’s logo on its dial. These watches were only ever given to COMEX divers, and as such, are incredibly rare.
