Rolex GMT Master

In 1954, Rolex launched the GMT Master in collaboration with Pan American Airways. Part of the Rolex Professional Watch Collection, GMT Masters feature a fourth hand 24-hour hand and a rotatable 24-hour bezel. This allowed the air crews working on Pan Am’s newly established long-haul services keep track of two zones simultaneously.

The original 6452 models were only produced for Pan Am flight crews and are now exceptionally rare. These had white dials, the 1036 movement, and a Bakelite bezel inset. This inset hasn’t proved to be particularly durable, so if you have a 6452 with its original bezel in good condition, you own a very rare watch indeed.

GMT Master II

In 1982, the GMT Master II (model number 16760) saw the introduction of an independently adjustable quickset hour hand. This allows the user to adjust the hour hand to the local time without disturbing the three remaining hands marking the seconds, minutes and original 24-hour setting.

Although it was developed in stainless steel as a professional timepiece, it wasn’t long before Rolex introduced luxury versions featuring precious metals and gemstones. Today, GMT Masters are highly collectable and earlier GMT and GMT II models are some of the most sought-after Rolexes on the market.
